Every Lavender & Thistle recipe begins with purpose. We thoughtfully select oils, butters, tallow, botanicals and other ingredients for the role they play in the finished product — from the hardness and lather of a bar to its texture, color and scent. Some are rooted in generations of traditional soapmaking; others allow us to create the fragrances and experiences we love today. What matters to us is knowing what goes into our products and being honest about why it's there.
The Tradition of Tallow
Tallow has a long history in traditional soapmaking, rooted in a time when makers worked thoughtfully with the materials available to them and little went to waste. At Lavender & Thistle Co., we carry that tradition forward by carefully hand-rendering beef tallow for select small-batch recipes.
For us, using tallow is about more than the finished bar. It reflects the kind of craftsmanship we believe in — slow, intentional, resourceful, and connected to generations of makers who came before us.
Hand-Rendered Beef Tallow
We carefully render our beef tallow before adding it to select soap recipes. In soapmaking, tallow contributes hardness and longevity to the finished bar while helping create the creamy lather characteristic of traditional tallow soap.
Raw Shea Butter
Rich and creamy, shea butter adds a luxurious quality to our soap while contributing to a firm, conditioning bar. We use it alongside carefully selected oils and tallow to create a balanced recipe with a smooth, creamy lather.
Soothing Colloidal Oatmeal
Finely milled colloidal oatmeal brings a soft, silky quality to our handcrafted soaps. Used in select recipes, it complements our rich oils and butters while contributing to a gentle, creamy lather and beautifully smooth bar.
Activated Charcoal
Deep, dramatic and beautifully simple, activated charcoal gives select bars their rich, distinctive color and smooth character. We use it thoughtfully in our handcrafted recipes to create striking soaps with an earthy, modern feel.
Essential Oils
Selected for their distinctive natural aromas, essential oils bring fresh, botanical character to select Lavender & Thistle creations. We use them thoughtfully when their scent and character are the right fit for the recipe.

We believe you should know what's in the products you bring home. That's why we're open about the ingredients we use and the choices behind them. Whether a recipe calls for a traditional ingredient, an essential oil or a carefully selected fragrance oil, each choice is made intentionally for the product we're creating.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
A cornerstone of traditional soapmaking, extra virgin olive oil contributes to a mild, conditioning bar with a smooth, silky feel. We pair it thoughtfully with our other oils and butters to create balanced soaps designed for everyday use.
Goat Milk
Goat milk brings a beautifully creamy quality to handcrafted soap. We incorporate goat milk into select recipes to create a rich, velvety lather and give those bars their distinctive, old-fashioned character.
Raw Local Honey
Sourced locally, raw honey adds something special to our soapmaking process. Its natural sugars help boost lather, contributing to the bubbly, creamy wash we love while giving select bars their warm, handcrafted character.
Handcrafted Botanicals
Inspired by the natural beauty at the heart of Lavender & Thistle, we use carefully selected botanicals in certain recipes for their color, texture and visual character. From delicate floral touches to rustic plant-based additions, each is chosen to complement the bar and the story behind it.
Fragrance Oils
Some scents simply can't be captured with essential oils alone. Carefully selected fragrance oils allow us to create the warm, complex and seasonal aromas that bring many Lavender & Thistle products to life — from autumn favorites to rich, comforting blends.
