More Than a Pretty Bar: Why Our Ingredients Matter

A beautiful bar of soap might catch your eye, but what matters most to us is what went into making it.

At Lavender & Thistle Co., every recipe begins with the ingredients. We choose each one intentionally—not because it sounds trendy on a label, but because of what it contributes to the finished bar.

It Starts With Tallow

Hand-rendered beef tallow is at the heart of many of our soaps. Tallow has been used in traditional soapmaking for generations, helping create a firm, long-lasting bar with a rich, creamy lather.

We carefully render our tallow before it ever enters the soap pot. It takes more time, but that slower, hands-on process is part of what makes our soap ours.

Oils & Butters With a Purpose

Tallow is only part of the recipe.

Depending on the bar, we pair it with thoughtfully selected oils and butters such as olive oil, shea butter, babassu oil and castor oil. Each contributes something different to the finished soap—from the character of the lather to the hardness and feel of the bar.

Our recipes aren't one-size-fits-all. We formulate them around what we want each particular bar to become.

The Extras Aren't Just for Looks

Some of our favorite soaps include ingredients you might recognize from the kitchen or garden.

Colloidal oatmeal, goat milk, raw honey, activated charcoal, clays and botanicals can all find their way into our small-batch recipes.

We choose these additions deliberately, creating bars with their own texture, appearance and character rather than simply decorating the surface.

Essential Oils & Fragrance Oils

Scent is part of the experience, too.

Depending on the recipe, we use carefully selected essential oils or skin-safe fragrance oils. We believe you should know what is in the bar you're bringing home, so we're transparent about which type of scent is used in each soap.

Some scents come straight from botanicals. Others allow us to create fragrances that simply can't be achieved with essential oils alone.

Either way, we choose them intentionally.

Simple Ingredients. Thoughtful Craftsmanship.

Rustic Lavender Soap making Still Life

For us, handcrafted soap isn't about making the longest ingredient list possible.

It's about understanding what each ingredient brings to the recipe and taking the time to turn those ingredients into something beautiful, functional and made to be used every day.

That's what you'll find behind every Lavender & Thistle bar: thoughtfully chosen ingredients, small-batch craftsmanship and a little bit of old-fashioned patience.
