A Return to Traditional Soapmaking

Long before soap filled store shelves in brightly colored bottles, it was made from simple ingredients, often using what families and communities already had available. Tallow was one of those ingredients.
Rendered animal fat has been used in soapmaking for generations because it creates something remarkably practical: a firm, long-lasting bar with a rich, creamy lather.
At Lavender & Thistle Co., we love the idea of returning to that slower, more intentional way of making everyday things.

So, Why Tallow?
Tallow brings several qualities to a handcrafted bar of soap. It contributes hardness and longevity, helps create a dense, creamy lather, and works beautifully alongside the plant oils and butters in our recipes.
Rather than relying on one ingredient to do everything, we formulate our soaps so that each ingredient has a purpose. Tallow is one piece of that balance.
We Render It Ourselves
One of the things that makes our process especially meaningful to us is that we don't simply open a container of finished tallow and pour it into a batch.
We render our beef tallow ourselves.
Rendering takes time. The fat is carefully prepared and slowly processed to create clean tallow ready for soapmaking. It adds another step to an already slow craft—but that's part of what Lavender & Thistle is about.
We want to know the ingredients we're working with. We want to understand the process. And we're willing to take the extra time when we believe it makes sense for the product we're creating.
Old-Fashioned Doesn't Mean Outdated
There is something beautifully practical about traditional soapmaking.
Creating small batches of soap allows for experimentation and personalization. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own small-batch soap.
Ingredients like tallow, olive oil, colloidal oatmeal, honey, goat milk, botanicals and clays have histories that stretch far beyond today's skincare trends. We aren't interested in using an ingredient simply because it's fashionable. We're interested in understanding why makers used it in the first place.
Then we combine that traditional knowledge with thoughtful modern formulation.
Thoughtfully Made. Honestly Explained.
Not every Lavender & Thistle product will contain tallow, just as not every recipe contains the same oils, botanicals or scent.
What matters to us is transparency.
You'll always be able to see what's in the product you're purchasing, and we're happy to explain why we chose it.
Because handmade should mean more than made by hand.
It should mean made with intention.
From our soap room to your home,
